Ben and Daij- The Last Two Week’s Top 10

Dive have decided to change their name to Diiv ‘out of respect’ for the 90’s band of the same name. They have also decided to release their 3 singles as Dive in a bundle, which costs a miniscule $15 from their label Captured Tracks. Their debut album ‘Oshin’ is out in June.

The Babies have released a new single called ‘My Name/The War’. This is following a great album from last year and an acoustic EP from earlier this year. We love The Babies because they always manage to mix their influences to form great music. In all their tracks you can hear the noise rock of The Vivian Girls and the psych-folk of Woods.

One of the bands that had a profound effect on us last year were Caged Animals and we’re glad to say that they’re back! They have a new video for ‘This Summer I’ll Make It Up To You’ from their 2011 record ‘Eat Their Own’. The video is shot on a lake and features frontman, Vincent Cacchione and his partner and bandmate, Magali Francoise as they chill both above, and below water. This is also the lead track from an upcoming EP entitled ‘This Summer’, which is due for a summer release.

Ben With Caged Animals some time last year.

Other new videos include one from Fanzine for their track ‘L.A.’, they are one of the best of the 90’s sounding bands about at the moment and this is one of our favourite tracks of theirs. They are going to have a huge year, and deservedly so. Catch them live while you can!

Manchester’s post punk-esque Golden Glow are back with a video for ‘Blizzard’. The project, led by Pierre Hall, already have one album under their belt from last year called ‘Tender Is The Night’, which we are yet to find in a record store! Sort it out guys.

Bos Angeles have let another track loose on the world. This one is called ‘Pretend For You’ and is sounding great. Check it out here.

Our excuse for failing to deliver a top 5 last week is, in fact, a good one. We have a gig coming up on the 8th, somehow we have managed to book three amazing guitar bands to play for us at The Hoxton White Horse. Here’s a little on each of the bands:

Playlounge are a London two piece who make great noise pop. They combine thrashy, fast paced guitars and drums with good lyrics to produce a wall of sound that is insanely addictive. They will be the first on stage on Tuesday (9pm).

YRRS are a lo-fi band who will keep your pulse high following Playlounge. They play rhythmic, no thrills guitar pop which we are currently hooked on.

Finally Breathe Out, who are our final band, are a group of East Londoners who are looking like they are going to have a big year. Following an EP in April, they have released a single called ‘Champion’ which we love.

This is all happening at The Hoxton White Horse, a venue that not only is a classy bar in the heart of creative London but also offers street food from all corners of the globe which we think is pretty cool. They have been kind enough to offer their basement to us so we can put on this night and if it’s a success there may be more to follow…
Come to The Hoxton White Horse on the 8th of May and watch three amazing bands for free!

Ben and Daij- The last two weeks Top 10

Once again we have been completely disorganised and failed to do a Top 5 last week. So to make it up to you we have done another Top 10!

Friends have put out another track this one entitled ‘Mind Control’! This is the first from their debut album called ‘Manifest’, which is out on Lucky Number on the 4th of June. This is even poppier than their previous singles but still has a nostalgic feel that we love.

Bleached are coming to the UK! The West Coast noise rockers will be hitting London on the 16th of May to play the Shacklewell Arms. Tickets are £6, a price definitely worth paying to hear catchy American noise rock tracks like ‘Think Of You’ or ‘Electric Chair’.

Yuck are back! This is the first release since releasing their eponymous debut album last year, which was one of our favourite records of the entire year. This new track is called ‘Chew’ and sticks to their fuzzy guitar sound it sounds great and hopefully this will be followed by more releases soon!

Fair Ohs recorded ‘A Tribute To Paul Westerberg’ for Record Store Day, more on Record Store day in a bit. Paul Westerberg is the former lead singer of The Replacements and a huge inspiration for Fair Ohs, to show their appreciation they recorded a cover of ‘Dyslexic Heart’ from the soundtrack of the 1992 film ‘Singles’. Their cover is done with an afro pop tinge to the original and it’s great.

Cymbals have made a video for ‘No Bad Decisions’, which is off their upcoming EP ‘Sideways Sometimes’ which will be out soon on Tough Love Records. The track is indie pop at its best and the video, well it takes mixed media to a new level.

Now for some street art, Stik has another solo show! Open now at Imitate Modern in Marylebone, you will be able to see some of the East London based artists famous figures. The exhibition is called ‘Walk’ and features large scale canvas and sculpture amongst other materials. Catch this exhibition before it sells out!

Record Store Day was yesterday and Ben went down to Rough Trade East to pick up some of the hot releases. To complete this 10, we will show you what you should’ve bought!

The Wake- Here Comes Everybody (Boxset). The Wake are Ben’s favourite 80’s band and are incredibly influential to today’s indie pop scene. This boxset came complete with the singles, which feature ‘Plastic Flowers’ and ‘Gruesome Castle’ which have been covered by Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing, respectively.

The Cure- Three Imaginary Boys (LP). The first five albums by The Cure were re-mastered for RSD 2012 and we wish we could buy all of them but this is Daij’s favourite and also a must have for any Cure fan so it makes it onto our list.

The Kinks- Face To Face (LP). This album has ‘Sunny Afternoon’ on it, no more needs to be said.

Dirty Beaches/Xiu Xiu- Tu Ne Dis Rien /Always (7”). Dirty Beaches contribution is a cover of Francoise Hardy’s 1964 track ‘Tu Ne Dis Rien’ which translates as ‘You Say Nothing’. Dirty Beaches have put their own twist to the song and it has deep, echoing vocals which at first can come across as haunting but then strangely warming. Xiu Xiu rework Erasure’s ‘Always’.
